Devised
by Smooth Operations in 1999, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards has developed
into one of the must-see events of the year. Celebrating musical
excellence and artistic talent across the folk, roots and acoustic
genre, this evening of glitz and glamour acknowledges lifetime achievements,
recognises stunning new music and and attracts mainstream media
attention. The Folk Awards has established a reputation where guests
from beyond the world of folk music join forces to recognise the
work of folk musicians: Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Peter O'Toole,
Sir David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Sean Bean, Bob Hoskins, Robin
Cook, Charles Kennedy and Tessa Jowell have been among our guest
presenters, while those picking up awards have included John Martyn,
Taj Mahal, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, The Chieftains,
Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Kate Rusby,
Eliza Carthy and many more.

Part
of BBC Radio 2's commitment to nurturing new talent, the Young Folk
Award is an annual search for the best budding folk musicians in
the UK. The event is open to anyone aged between fifteen and twenty,
performing as a band, duo or soloist.
The best entrants are selected to take part in the semi-final -
a weekend of musical workshops culminating in a show in which our
judges determine the finalists. The final is held in December and
compered by Mike Harding. The highlights and winning performance
are broadcast as part of Mike's regular Wednesday night show. The
winners secure a place at the BBC Radio 2 Cambridge Folk Festival
- one of the most prestigious events in the traditional musical
calendar - and record a studio session for Mike's show.
The event is organised on behalf of Radio 2 and Smooth Operations
by Mrs Casey Music. For further information contact Mrs
Casey Music and visit BBC
Folk & Acoustic's Young Folk Award minisite.
